Quick start

Pellet stove

A pellet stove doesn't tolerate repeated ignitions well: each start-up uses electricity and fouls the burn pot. Versatile Thermostat drives it with long cycles for stable comfort without multiplying ignitions.

Versatile Thermostat's strengths

  • Long cycles

The cycle duration and the minimum on and off delays can be set to respect the stove's start-up time.

  • Room sensor

Temperature is measured where you live, not next to the stove, which would otherwise overheat the main room.

  • Automatic stop and restart

With a stove exposed as a climate, automatic stop and restart avoid leaving it idling when the room is at temperature.

  • Presence

The stove switches to Eco when the home is empty and restores Comfort before you return.

  • Open windows

The stove switches off when a window stays open.

  • Failure detection

If the temperature doesn't rise while the stove is supposed to be heating (empty hopper, ignition fault), Versatile Thermostat flags it.

Tutorial: a stove controlled by dry contact

Example: a pellet stove with a “room thermostat” input (dry contact), wired to a Zigbee relay module, with a temperature sensor in the living room.

  1. Wire the dry contact

Wire the stove's room thermostat input to a relay integrated in Home Assistant, following the stove's manual. Configure the stove to obey this contact.

  2. Install Versatile Thermostat

Install the integration from HACS, then restart Home Assistant.

Open your Home Assistant instance and open a repository inside the Home Assistant Community Store.
  3. Create the thermostat

Add the Versatile Thermostat integration, choose “Thermostat over a switch”, name it “Stove” and select the temperature sensor and the outdoor sensor.

  4. Add the relay

In “Underlyings”, select the relay's switch entity.

  5. Set a long cycle

Choose a long cycle (30 to 60 minutes) and minimum on and off delays of several minutes, so a start-up always runs to completion.

  6. Set the presets

Define the Eco, Comfort, Boost and Frost protection temperatures, for example 18, 20, 21 and 10 °C.

  7. Presence, windows and failure

Link the presence sensor and the window opening sensors, then enable heating failure detection to be alerted if the stove doesn't start.

The pellet stove doesn't have a dedicated profile in the documentation yet: these settings are inspired by high-inertia heating. Adjust the cycle duration to your stove's manual and share your settings with the community.
