Quick start

Thermostatic valve (TRV)

A thermostatic head measures the temperature right next to the radiator, so it regulates poorly. Versatile Thermostat recalibrates it against a real room sensor and can directly control the valve opening.

Versatile Thermostat's strengths

  • Direct valve control

Versatile Thermostat computes the opening percentage with the TPI algorithm and sends it to the valve, instead of juggling its setpoint.

  • Room sensor and calibration

The room temperature comes from a real sensor. It can be copied into the valve (calibration offset or external temperature).

  • Auto-TPI

Regulation coefficients are learned automatically over successive cycles, room by room.

  • Open windows

Valves close when a window opens, via a sensor or automatic detection of the temperature drop.

  • Central boiler

The boiler switches on when enough valves call for heat and switches off when all of them are closed.

  • Several valves per room

A single thermostat controls all the valves in a room, with a minimum and maximum opening per valve.

Tutorial: a living room with two Sonoff TRVZB

Example: a living room heated by two hot-water radiators, each fitted with a Sonoff TRVZB paired through Zigbee2MQTT, and a Zigbee temperature sensor in the middle of the room.

  1. Pair the valves and the sensor

Pair both valves and the sensor in Zigbee2MQTT. Check that each valve exposes the number entities “valve opening degree”, “valve closing degree” and “local temperature calibration”.

  2. Install Versatile Thermostat

Install the integration from HACS, then restart Home Assistant.

Open your Home Assistant instance and open a repository inside the Home Assistant Community Store.
  3. Create the thermostat

Settings > Devices & services > Add integration > Versatile Thermostat. Choose “Thermostat over a climate”, name it “Living room” and select the temperature sensor.

  4. Add the valves

In “Underlyings”, add the two valve climate entities.

  5. Enable direct valve control

In “Self-regulation”, choose direct valve control. For each valve, fill in the opening, closing and calibration entities. Leave the TPI coefficients at their defaults: Auto-TPI will tune them.

  6. Set the presets

Define the Eco, Comfort, Boost and Frost protection temperatures, for example 18, 20, 21 and 7 °C.

  7. Windows and boiler

Enable open window detection (sensor or automatic). If a boiler feeds the radiators, declare it in the central configuration so it follows the valves' demand.

With the Sonoff TRVZB, keep a regulation threshold of at least 3%: below that, the valve may lose its calibration. If that happens, use the valve recalibration service.
